Adult family therapy

What is adult family therapy?

Family therapy with adult children and their parents, as well as with adult siblings, is an area of specialization that I am deeply passionate about. In individual therapy, we often hear about early traumas from one patient’s perspective. However, adult family therapy offers an incredible opportunity to address the entire family system, helping them unravel decades of complex dynamics and unresolved traumatic events together.

By working collectively, families can rebuild healthier, more balanced relationships and establish a stronger foundation for future growth.

Adult family therapy allows for exploring longstanding conflicts that may have caused estrangement, enmeshment, or boundary issues, which are common within adult family systems. The unique dynamics between adult children and their parents often involve unresolved power imbalances, communication breakdowns, and emotional wounds that may date back to childhood.

With the expansion of  PSYPACT across over 40 states, adult family therapy is becoming more accessible to families who may be geographically distant but are still navigating these interpersonal conflicts. This new accessibility allows for therapy across state lines, making it easier for families spread out across the country to engage in healing conversations around these crucial relational dynamics.

Family Therapy for Adult Children and their Parents

Adult family therapy with adult children and their parents offers a valuable opportunity to address long-standing issues that may have shaped the family’s dynamics over time. It allows for open communication about unresolved conflicts, emotional wounds, and unspoken grievances, providing a safe space for each family member to express their experiences and feelings. Through this process, families can heal past traumas, break dysfunctional patterns, and rebuild trust, fostering deeper understanding and empathy between parents and adult children. Therapy also helps to clarify boundaries, improve communication, and support healthier relationships, creating a stronger, more resilient family system capable of navigating future challenges together.

Family Therapy for Adult Siblings

Adult family therapy with siblings offers a unique chance to resolve longstanding tensions, rivalries, and miscommunications that may have developed over years of shared history. It provides a space for siblings to express their individual perspectives, address unresolved conflicts, and explore how childhood dynamics may still affect their current relationship. By working together in therapy, siblings can improve communication, develop healthier boundaries, and foster mutual understanding, which can lead to stronger emotional connections. This process can be especially valuable when siblings are navigating major life transitions, caregiving roles, or family responsibilities, helping them to collaborate more effectively and build more supportive, harmonious relationships moving forward.
